Ready for a more efficient future

S&P beyond ErP directive

The Directive for energy efficiency 2012/27/UE modifies Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC (ErP Directive) developing a new frame of Ecodesign requirements for energy-related products.

This directive takes part into the 2020 strategy, according to which the energy consumption must be reduced a 20% and the renewable energies quote should increase in a 20% for 2020.

The 1253/2014 regulation applies to ventilation units

A Ventilation Unit is an electricity driven appliance equipped with at least one impeller, one motor and a casing and intended to replace used air by outdoor air in a building or a part of a building.

The specific Ecodesign requirements for these units will be applied in two stages:

  • Since 01/01/2016, they must comply with specific efficiency values.
  • From 01/01/2018 superior values will enter into force.

Ventilation Units are divided in Residential (RVU) and Non-Residential (NRVU) Units.

What are the established requirements?

Energy efficiency requirements

  • Since 01/2016 the SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) should be equal to or less than 0 kWh/(m2.a).
  • From 01/2018 the SEC should be equal to or less than -20 kWh/(m2.a).

Component requirements

  • The Ventilation Units should be equipped with a variable speed motor or a speed controller.
  • The Double-flow with Ventilation Units should be equipped with a heat recovery system and a by-pass system.
  • From 01/2018 Ventilation Units equipped with filters should be provided with a visual signal for pollution warning.

Information requirements

Manufacturer obligations:

  • Energy label.
  • Product datasheet (accurate technical specifications).
  • Instruction manual.
  • Any kind of advertising, communication or technical material will show SEC class.

Distributors obligations:

  • Energy label + Product datasheet included with the product.
  • If the product is not exposed, the energy class, SEC, maximum airflow and LwA should be informed.
  • The promotional and advertising information of the products should show SEC class.

Energy efficiency requirements

Since 01/2016:

  • The minimum thermal efficiency of heat exchangers is 67%.
  • The efficiency of the fans should be higher than a concrete value.
  • The pressure drop inside the units with air treatment should be within concrete limits.

Since 01/2018:

  • The minimum thermal efficiency of heat exchangers must be 73%.
  • The efficiency of fans and the limits of pressure drop inside the unit are more demanding.

Component requirements

All Ventilation Units, with exception of the double-flow, will be equipped with a variable speed motor or a speed controller.

  • The Ventilation Units with EC motors comply with this.
  • The Ventilation Units with minimum 3-effective-speeds comply with this.
  • The Ventilation Units with single-phase or three-phase AC motors should be associated with a voltage regulator or a frequency inverter.

The double-flow Ventilation Units should be equipped with a heat recovery system and a thermal by-pass.

From 01/2018 Ventilation Units equipped with filters should be provided with a visual signal for pollution warning.

Information requirements

The regulation requires informing of several terms for each category of NRVU. This information will be available in the technical documentation of Ventilation Units and the S&P website.
